Living with the reality and pain of spiteful blogs

by: AUDREY VIJAINDREN

Internet reality show ‘Malaysian Dreamgirl’ season two has been on air for the past 11 weeks. It’s a week before the grand finale, and the top model hopefuls are not spared the drama and spite that come with the dot-com world, writes AUDREY VIJAINDREN

"PINKY has flawless skin. All the other girls should be jealous. The only thing I don't like about Pinky is her eye bags. You need more sleep girl."

"Dawn? Hmm... still acceptable. Not much difference compared with the 'make-up-ed' Dawn."

"But I must say, Juanita has got the worst skin among the girls. But it can be healed if she really cares for it and goes for more facial treatments."

Those are only some of the "nasty" comments posted on the blogs of the Malaysian Dreamgirl website.

The Dreamgirl show is a reality show model search competition.

The show follows the lives of 12 young women as they step into the glamorous world of modelling, enduring the drama and trauma of living together as they compete for the grand prize.

The girls are subjected to catty comments and insults from the Internet as bloggers freely express their opinion on any subject, from the contestants' make-up to their family.

Dawn Lee Yeen Sze believes there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Although the girls are left without Internet access, they are allowed to share their thoughts through the show's producer who blogs for them.

After 11 weeks of insults, praises and scrutiny, three girls remain in the competition.

"There is a lot of pain and sadness, we have all cried a lot," says accountancy student Juanita Anushya Francis Jacob, 22.

"All the girls I want to be with have left. They were the ones that looked out for me."

Juanita says people compare her with last year's winner, Cindy.

"But both of us are so different. I'm not well to do. All the girls admire the clothes I wear, but it's all from my cousins.

"People think that my family is rich but my parents are just average wage earners. I drive a 10-year-old Kancil.

"I hate the things that are mentioned in the blogs. Those who comment don't even know me.

"I don't care if they comment about me, but I hate when they talk about my family. It's horrible that they would say things just to hurt someone."

For make-up artist Pinky Liew Mee Han, 20, blog comments about her boyfriend hurt the most.

"In the beginning, it was really sad. There were a lot of people commenting about my poor English and my boyfriend," says Pinky.

"Since I don't get to read much about what was posted on the blogs, I only hear about it from my friends and family during the 10-minute calls we are allowed.

"It's quite sad to hear about what they have blogged. Some people can be quite bad and say things that don't mean anything to them."

Former Miss Malaysia contestant Dawn Lee Yeen Sze, 23, believes there is no such thing as bad publicity.

"Everyone has his or her own opinion and I don't bother. I always believe that there is no such thing as good or bad publicity, any publicity is good," says the economics graduate.

"Someone once said, 'Say what you feel, say what you like because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind'. I live by those words.

"People will always criticise but if you listen to everyone then you won't be happy. As long as you know what you are doing is right."

Dawn says the funniest thing about the whole experience was when some of the girls bought a roti man's handphone.

"We were wondering why the girls were always waiting for the bread vendor and some of them didn't buy anything from him.

"Then we found the girls locked in the master bedroom after the bread vendor had left. They had borrowed his phone.

"After borrowing it a few times, they convinced him to sell his phone. The rest of us felt betrayed, because we trusted each other."

Malaysian Dreamgirls producer Jerad Solomon says the introduction of the blogs this season has seen a lot of drama.

"People think it's all glitz and glamour but it's far from it. It is difficult to be talked about and not being able to defend yourself but it's a lesson about being in the spotlight.

"There is a lot of misunderstanding, the girls are very confrontational.

"But the main aim of the show is about making them feel comfortable, to be themselves.

"We haven't shown anything that's not there. We don't create unnecessary drama. But we do want the show to be action packed.

"We don't interfere too much in the way they live. We don't take sides and try to get them to solve their problems by themselves.

"But the blogs will be here to stay, especially for the girls to experience the responsibility that comes with being a celebrity."

“Specially for Pu Pu Fish”Hellllllllloooooooooooo……………….. It’s pinky here ya!!! Oh…..it’s been a long time since I’ve touch my laptop and written my personal blog…….. Getting lazy already…….. hahaha. Some of you must have certainly wondered where i went!!!!!! :)

It was an Incredible Day for Pinky today…… You know what???? I had my chocolate buffet at Schokolart in Soho KL and i brought Dawn along as my Miss Incredible photoshoot challenge prize……. :) We were there in the afternoon and the ambience and the scenery there was breath taking ohhhhhh……. Maybe after the competition i’ll catch up for a drink with my Pu Pu Fish…….. hehehe :) The manager told us we could have all the chocolates for FREE…….. Yooooohhhuuuu……. Of course i won’t miss the opportunity laaaa…………… Some more the chocolates were so tempting……….
Then you know what happened???? Half way through, we were surprised by our boyfriends………… Ohhhhhhhhh My god………… What a great prize for me yaaaaaa……… I was stoned when i saw pu pu fish….. Both of us were speechless !!!!!!!! :P Damn HAPPY loooooooh and although it has passed, i’m still excited every time i think of it…….!!!!! We were so busy talking we didn’t really taste all the chocolates…….. So sad and wasted….. Rite??? Never mind laaa, i can try it again after all this…….. :) I really appreciated every moment we spent together, because we only had 1 hour plus…. Actually there wasn’t enough time to say everything that i wanted to tell him but is okay…..better than nothing…… :)

He said he never expected me to speak about all the problems between him and my family during the interview… He was worried coz he didn’t know how my parents will react after they watch the video… Wanted to tell you something that i forgot to tell on video……I remember the last time he asked me why don’t I confront my mother and talk to her properly about our relationship???? Maybe last time i wasn’t courageous enough to confront everything….Because i kept telling myself you won’t be able to give me the best as long as i’m with you …….. SO BAD yaaaa…..but. “MONEY CAN’T BUY HAPPINESS NEVER EVER” I don’t care how the impact will be after they watch it…. I can tell you here and now “I CAN SACRIFICE ANYTHING TO BE WITH YOU” even modeling….. Doesn’t mean i’m not serious about it….. but i can tell you you’re my first priority……. Do you get it???? :)

I know you’re very committed to our relationship…… i am as well……….. I used to be rebellious and rash in what i do…… Sometimes i tended to show my temper to you even when i was in the wrong……… and I’ve never ever thought of the consequences before i do something…….:( Fortunately, You kept FORGIVING and FORGIVING…… But being on the competition, i’ve learned a lot…. You’re really supporting me along the way…
Everyone keeps saying you’re a nice person, and i should stick on to you ohhhhh …… hahahaaha…… :) Okay… i’m not gonna talk more about it……. But i hope sooner later they will understand what is actually the best for me !!!! :)
OKAY laaaaaaaaaaaaa………… gotta go already…..and Thanks to all my fans and who have been supporting me all the way yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa……………. LOVE YOU LOTS … :p MUAKS

Tuesday 5 May 2009
Haaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii …………………. Has everyone been well ????? :) But i’m not well………. :( I think today is a terrible and awful day…….. Why???? Firstly, Ming left our MDG family……. We’re very close since the closed audition, you know??? We shared the blanket and the same bed !!!!! I used to hear her noisy voice day and night….. We would gossip gossip all the time before went to dreamland ……….. hahahahahaahah I MISS YOU MING MING MING…….. Wait me ya, i’m gonna come out soon and head to Bangsar for shopping yaaaaaaa……………. !!!! :P
We had the photoshoot in Mist Club after the elimination…… !! Elaine did the intro and said that we had a partner to do the shoot….. and when she said welcome to our partner RICARDO…. Who’s that I thought??? Is it a latin male model???? or from Brazil??? We were asking each other full of curiosity????? Hahahahahahaahah………… sounded stupid yaaaaaa…… But unexpectedly ……….. IT WAS A “GRUMPY” PYTHON…………….. WHAT THE HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL…………….. I was SCREAMING like HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL………It was still alive…………. I don’t know when my tears started falling down…………….. HEY, It was driving me crazy man………… You can’t even imagine how big the SNAKE was, you know??? I SHOULD THANK DESMOND (our fashion stylist), because IT WAS HIS SUGGESTION………….. :( I was damn scared it would bite me and strangle my body until my bones broke…………….. Hoooooooooooooooo.. MY GOODNESS……………..How did i manage it??????

Actually i thought the most challenging shoot was the one for Envy Magazine yesterday because we did it in a junkyard……………….. It was really really dirty like the floor has not been washed in a hundred years…. Some more i was lying down on the floor…actually I don’t mind getting dirty because i know they want the photo to turn out nice. But kesian the stylist cause she was the one who rented the baju from the boutique… :( The photographer was really strict…. she said she could not get the right expression from me so i was quite scared my photo would not be up to her expectation…….. -_-. Unfortunately, i also got rashes on my neck and hands…………………. DAMN ITCHY looooooooooooooooooooooooooo >_<>

Ohhhhhhhhhhh…………… I’ve gone too far from what i was saying just now…………….. SORRY SORRY !!!!!! Okay…………. i kept telling myself i needed to lose my fear and phobia of the snake ……….. I’ve done my make up and all, and it was my turn to shoot….. But i couldn’t do it…………… I cried again when i was touched it ……………. I could not stop my tears from dropping down….I kept crying and crying…….All the crew and Dawn tried to console me and calm me down….. My hands were shaking shaking like hellllllllll…………. Huuuuuuuuuuuuuu….. The snake really really freaked me out laaaaaaaaaa…………………. But i had no choice…… I had to do the photoshoot…………… So i tried my hardest to touch it when i was doing the shoot……. -_- I can’t explain how terrible was it…………… I sounded so weak ……………. You can check out the episode laaaaaaaaa…….. You can see my crying face again……..
Ok.. Gonna sleep already, Thank for reading yaaaaaaaaaaa…………. Bye Bye…

MISS YA PU PU FISH ……. ^^

Pinky and others MDG Top 3 as featured in The Star

Friday May 8, 2009

Final three By YAM PHUI YEE

IN JUST a week’s time, one young aspiring model will achieve her dreams when the winner of Malaysian Dreamgirl (MDG) Season 2 is announced. She will walk away with a brand new Chevrolet Aveo Lux 1.4 (A), RM10,000 cash, a spread in InTrend magazine, an exclusive Andrews Models portfolio and a world of opportunities in the modelling industry. With 21-year-old graphic designer Chiang Lee Ming booted out of the online reality competition in yesterday’s episode, the race is now between accountancy graduate Juanita Anushya Francis Jacob, 22, economics and international business graduate Dawn Lim Yeen Sze, 23, and make-up artist Liew Mee Han aka Pinky, 21.The girls were sad to watch Ming leave, having lived in the same house for the past 11 weeks, but they are also excited to inch closer to their dream.

Dawn Lim Yeen Sze

Dawn “We had to surrender our cellphones at the beginning of the competition. Just before I did that, my sister texted me to say that she dreamed that I got into Top Three and wow, it’s happening now,” Dawn shared. All three girls’ desire to win is obvious.Out of determination to pursue their ambition, two of them auditioned without their parents’ knowledge; one of them learned make-up skills to enhance her future modelling jobs; and all three are already planning to scout for agencies as soon as the competition ends.“I’ve always loved modelling since I was a kid. I remember using my mum’s make-up secretly and she caught me,” says Juanita. The competition gives contestants a taste of what it is like in the modelling world. It is not enough to just have a pretty face and love the runway and camera flashes, they also need a good measure of communication skills, tolerance, hard work, and boldness to embrace challenges thrown at them.During a recent Safari-themed photoshoot (footage of which will be released tomorrow), the show’s host Elaine Daly announced that they will be joined by a special guest, “Ricardo”. Turning around to meet Ricardo, the girls went hysterical, screaming their lungs out when they were greeted by a Burmese python.Pinky was overcome with tremendous fear causing her to burst into tears. It took a while before she could muster her courage and pose with the reptile (whose real name is Grumpy).“For me, the best thing in the show is photoshoots, although each one is a challenge for me because it determines who gets eliminated. Whether your clothes or make-up are nice or not you have to pull it off,” Pinky said before she met Grumpy.Obviously, the competition poses many challenges to contestants. For one, they have to live under the same roof with 10 other girls from different backgrounds. Catfights ensued and Pinky, a self-confessed
mummy’s girl, was involved in an argument over missing food in the house once.

Pinky Liew

Pinky “Having no cellphone was very, very difficult for me. We were only allowed to call for five minutes per week,” she said. “I really had to learn to be nice to people and negotiate things! There were many misunderstandings but now everything has been cleared.”As the winner is solely determined by public SMS votes, what happens in the house and how each contestant carries herself matters.Of course, it’s a modelling competition and the most important thing is to be able to model well – to strike the right pose and pull off that sultry, sexy or fierce look.“I was very timid before this but the competition has made me a confident person. I take criticism better and work on it. Even if people say I’ve done well, I say I can go another notch,” says Juanita, the optimistic go-getter from Johor Baru. On the show, the girls get help and tips from the show’s judges — Elaine; fashion stylist Lim Jimmy; Andrew’s Models founder Andrew Tan; and Beautilicious cosmetics CEO Julie Wong. In a recent episode, the girls got the chance to chat with pop singer Reshmonu and find out what the entertainment industry is like.Dawn found assurance in the session. “I love to laugh out loud and I get comments that I should restrain myself or people might get scared. So I asked him, ‘Can you be yourself totally?’ and he said ‘Yes, you can’t please everyone’. So I’m still laughing out loud,” said the bubbly girl.Whether that tip pays off, we’ll only know during the finale event at The Curve in Mutiara Damansara, Selangor, on May 15. The next couple of weeks would be all about getting ready for the big day. Pinky is working on her catwalk and practicing different facial expressions from her usual soft and cute look.Dawn is preparing herself mentally and doing stretches to help her sway with style on the runway. Juanita posted notes on Friendster and Facebook to ask her friends to come to the finale and vote for her. The girls look forward to going back to their family and friends when the competition ends.

Juanita Francis

Juanita “I’m going to rest for two weeks. This is the most tiring and challenging competition I’ve ever been in. I’ve never made it this far in a competition,” says Pinky. As for Dawn, she will be gobbling down a bowl of her favourite pan mee while Juanita wants to start going for castings and agency hunting.“I’ll be knocking on doors after this. I will have a lot of rejections in this business but I won’t give up,” she says.A title like the Malaysian Dreamgirl 2009 will surely help any of these girls in their future modelling jobs.
